Decorating-whether it's a master bedroom, a living room, or even a "wasted" space like that area under a staircase-is an expression of who you are. And while the reality of decorating may seem simple, in truth, it's easy to become overwhelmed by choice

Big or small space, suburban home or city apartment, decorating and designing comes with a flood of questions
What colors should you choose?
How should you lay out furniture and lighting?
When is it okay to use wallpaper instead of paint?
Where should you shop for accessories?
And those are easy ones compared to these
What's your particular design style?
What are you trying to communicate?
What's your design brand look like?
If questions like these make you a little hesitant to approach your next design project, you're not alone. And that's where potter and designer Jonathan Adler comes in. He knows quite a thing or two about the importance of good interior design, and has built an incredibly successful design company. His name is synonymous with design that marries form and function-but isn't afraid to break the rules and stand out. For him, a well-designed interior is like a great outfit. It's personal and it feels like you, not just on an average day, but when you're at your absolute best.
In the 12 charming, informative, and inspiring episodes of Decorate like a Designer, with Jonathan Adler, you'll learn all the major rules of good design and decoration and finally say farewell to feelings of intimidation. Along the way, while you consider the vast and eye-popping history of design, you'll be introduced to some of Jonathan's biggest influences and inspirations and you'll learn handy tips and tricks to use just like the experts. With this foundation in place, you'll be able to throw off the shackles of societal expectations regarding taste, to put your own stamp on your design choices to make the spaces around you truly memorable-and truly "you".
Learn Everything You Need to Know about Design
Good design, according to Jonathan, is 99% classical foundation and 1% playful punctuation. That's just one of the many foundational insights you'll glean from Decorate like a Designer, with Jonathan Adler. Every episode in this series begins with an introduction to the key elements and rules of good design.
Here are just a few of the many rules you'll learn
Tentpoles of Style: Each of Jonathan's three tentpoles of style can help you decide who you want to be, and each is comprised of a different set of materials, inspirations, and influences. There's pop, which is artsy and based in graphic sensibility; natural, a soft and emotional vibe with lots of woods, ceramics, and linen; and deluxe, which conveys aspirations of luxury and status.
Building Your Brand: The key to building your design brand is starting with a three-word branding guide. First, pick an adjective that describes a personal trait ("well-read"); second, determine the emotional vibe you're looking for ("farmhouse"); third, name your occupation or lifestyle, or who you want to be ("socialite"). Putting them together, there's your brand: well-read farmhouse socialite.
Making Wasted Space Work for You: Don't know what to do with wasted spaces? Start with thinking about function. What is the space missing in order to be truly functional for you or the people you live with? How could it make your life easier? Questions like these can lead you to delightful design choices, like turning a walk-in closet into a guest bedroom with bunk beds or transforming a bay window into a craft space.
How to Choose Accessories: When accessorizing your space, you always need to keep in mind four characteristics. First, the content itself (Is it representational? Abstract?). Next, the accessory's scale or visual weight. Then, its shape (encompassing form and profile). And lastly, its color. Emphasize variety and balance. For example, if your mantel is rigid, choose organic forms to accessorize it.
Get Inspiration from Design Trends and Legends
All designers, from every era, communicate through their work.
In each episode, Jonathan is joined by his husband, author and fashion commentator Simon Doonan, for illuminating looks at design movements, trends, and icons that can serve as both background information and inspiration when decorating and designing your own spaces.
You'll learn more about trends like
Victoriana, noted for its regal scrolls and ornate layering;
Art Deco, beloved by many for its minimalist sophistication;
Mid-Century Modern, which conveyed post-WWII optimism; and
Postmodernism, with its focus on sampling elements from the past.
In particular, you'll get a sense of how individual pieces, rooms, and designers throughout history have directly impacted Jonathan's own design brand and style-and it's a love and admiration that could very well put you on new paths of exploration.
But more inspiring than design legends of the past is a design legend of today. Jonathan and his namesake brand have become icons of Modern American Glamour, and this series is a unique and exclusive opportunity to sit down and learn from the master potter and designer himself.
"As with all decorating moves, you really can do anything," Jonathan says in Decorate like a Designer, with Jonathan Adler. "Just make sure you understand the choices you're making in context. Understand the history and meaning of your decorating gestures, and use them thoughtfully."
And when in doubt, add a little more color.
